I leave my parakeets cage door open whenever I am home. He always stays in his cage. He may walk out on the door and chirp or climp up to the top to play with the toys up there. Now though he flies out. He chews my baskets. I can't leave the door open at all. When I am home and have the door shut he looks so sad. He hates it. I usually only shut the door when people are over, he is in trouble, or I am gone. I do not understand why he doesn't stay in anymore. Then when he is out he doesn't come to me like he used to.

Trust me my parakeet is far from lacking attention. He is barely in his cage. He is on my computer write now as I type this.
I do also have a lovebird who he does love dearly, and they do have out of the cage time together.

My bird does not lack out of the cage time. I have moved the basket to a not so noticeable area and it only took him 2 days to find it.
He does have a friend for out of the cage time (which is usually a good 4 hours a day if not more). My birds are always with me. I also have a lovebird that likes to chew on the basket, but my parakeet is a bad influence on the lovebird sometime. I got the lovebird second so he follows what my parakeet does.
My lovebird love toys. My parakeet doesn't. He likes carpet, baskets, and wood. Everything he can't have.
My birds are still spoiled.

At first they stay in or close to their cage because they feel safe there, and protected. Once they become more comfortable with their surroundings they may venture out to fly if given the chance. Would you like to stay only in your house or yard your whole life? Some birds do not have any interest in getting away from the cage ever. But it is good for them to get excercise, so if you have things that are special and that they like to chew you can cover them with a towel to protect them when you let him out. Since he likes to chew on the straw of a basket, I would get a little basket that he could have for his own. And keep it in an area you like him to be in. But that is just b/c I spoil my birds, dogs, husband! Some would say not to incourage bad behavior. It just depends on how you feel about it. And how far you are willing to go to try to keep your little friend happy. If you don't have a great deal of time to spend with him, you may consider getting him a friend. It does not have to be a girl, but it is very intertaining to see a boy show off for his girl. Which they do not do as much of you have two boys. Good luck!

It sounds like your little guy is liking his freedom and is becoming more brave. As for the chewing, birds love to chew wood, paper, plastic, and string, it helps keep their beaks down. My Sun Conure is always out of her cage and she chewed the wooden closet door that is behind her. My sister has a lovebird that kept letting herself out and she chewed up her vertical blinds and lined the outside of her cage, and they were plastic. LOL Birds just love to chew. You can trim his wings and then he won't fly around and get into your things and it will limit him to staying on you or on his cage.
Good luck to you.

Just keep the cage in a room that doesn't have stuff he can hurt or hurt him, he will soon get used to freedom and take interest in you again. You have to interact with him though, if you just ignor him he will be happy to stay up on a curtain rod or such. Good Luck!

I think you should try to leave the door open and have some free time everyday with your parakeet. If this doesn't work he may be sick so try asking your veteranarian.

he found the good life! why would he want to be in a cage now? your first mistake was letting him experience freedom. now, he's getting spoiled. you created a monster.

The temptation is too much. He loves to be free (like any of us) once he had a taste he will crave it.
