A USB Hard drive is referred to as an External Hard Drive. These are used to provide additonial space to your computer. The space of the hard drive does not add to your computer, it just provides another place to put things. I would recomend a 250 GB External hard drive, I bought one for 120$ and I will never run out of space. Some require that it be hooked up to an outlet though. But yes all you have to do is plug it in and it will work.
