you can ask, as this is the nature of instructor and student. one wants to learn, and the other should fill the need.

however, there is a set syllabus of knowledge transmission in anything we do. so the things you want may not be able to be taught to you until you have perfected other areas first.

you are better to ask "will we be doing any grappling and sweeps?" instead of CAN WE.
or "at what stage can I start to learn some grappling and sweep, what will I have to know before I am ready?"

same intent, different approach.

To ask a question makes a fool of you for 5 minutes
To never know makes a fool of you a lifetime
As Bushsido states many fine teachers will go out of their way to work for your benefit.

Yes, but usually my instructor will ask if there's something specific I'd like to work on. Sometimes he has something planned and it wouldn't be appropriate to ask him to change his plans.

a good instructer would ask if anyone wants to work on anything specific.when i was still teaching i always allowed time to work on specific things that my students wanted.and it had nothing to do with being paid.it seems to be a popular misconception that senseis are in it for the money.a lot dont make anything in fact it costs them.

There's nothing wrong with asking your Sensei or Sifu to teach you new moves.

Your Sensei or Sifu may agree to teach you if he/she believes that the move you wish to learn is a) within your ability to learn, b) within the style you're learning, and c) if you have reached the level to be taught it.

Yes...

Especially if you know your own strengths/weaknesses and are attempting to use what works best for YOU.
