Interesting - I know in some cultures people believe that when you sneeze your heart stops beating for a second so that's why they say bless you.

Apparently, it was believed at some point in history that when a person sneezed it was possible to expectorate one's soul in the process. If someone said "bless you" or "God bless you", it was supposed to stop the 'escaping' of the soul, and still allow the sneezer to becapable of entering Heaven.

As I understand it, in the old days, people thought after you sneezed, it made your heart stop...so they would hurry up and say God bless you....in hopes the heart would start beating again.

I heard somewhere that whenever you would sneeze back in the day people believed it scared away bad spirits. Thus, people would say "God bless you" as a type of "hey thanks for scaring away those bad spirits!"

I heard that it used to be believed that when you sneeze, your heart stops, but studies later proved that was not true.
