People who misinterpret the saying "Spare the rod, spoil the child?" There are so many people who say this and have no clue the actual true meaning.
Can someone give me the real, true meaning of this and not just a guess or an opinion. Thanks so much.

It means you spoil your child if you don't have "discipline". There are many different interpretations of discipline but it does not mean "beat your child" or they will be spoiled. Set limits and boundaries and have consequences if the rules aren't followed.
Yes, it does make me mad when people use this as an excuse to hit their child. I guess they forgot the passage that says "Parents don't anger your child to wrath"! Good question, by the way, sometimes I feel like it's just me who gets mad about this! Good luck!

The saying comes from a time when coporal punishment (i.e. spanking or paddling) was used as a common disciplinary method on children. The rod was a small wooden stick sometimes used to administer the punishment. So the meaning is if an adult doesnt disipline the child, the child will not learn to live by the rules of society.
For spanking to be effective, it must be done consistantly and for good reason. Some countries allow spanking, only in very specified situations. I remember reading of an incident in Canada ( I may be mistaken ), where the articke stated that spanking a child is considered justifiable when 1: The adult is not angry when the spanking is administered, and 2: if t is in response to an intentional action on the part of the child that could result in injury of death of the child or others.

Unfortunately, some people use the idea as an excuse to physically abuse the children.

It is part of a poem:
If matrimony and hanging go
By dest'ny, why not whipping too?
What med'cine else can cure the fits
Of lovers when they lose their wits?
Love is a boy by poets stil'd
Then spare the rod and spoil the child (Part II, Canto I, ll. 839-44)

Basically it means that if you discipline your child they will grow up right - if you don't then they will be spoiled and you will have ruined them.

oh - and it does make me mad when people use this as an excuse to beat their kid.
