Brown sugar is just granulated (regular white) sugar with molasses added. Dark brown sugar has more molasses than light brown sugar.

Brown sugar is regular white sugar with a percentage of molasses added in. Dark brown has 6% and light brown has 3%, I believe.
You can just add the regular white sugar to your cake, but know it will alter the taste, and look of the finished product.
In a pinch, if you don't have any molasses on hand, you could add a bit of pancake syrup, stir it in, mix well and use. Happy Baking!

White sugar is brown sugar that the molasses is taken out of.
light brown has more taken out. You have to read the label lately because they are refining the sugar and then putting caramel color back in for brown sugar. Brown sugar needs to be packed for proper measurement because it is wetter. Granulated is regular white sugar.

granulated sugar is regular sugar. brown sugar is much the same as white the light brown is a lighter colour and has much smaller grains and is much better for baking because it blends so easily
