I have looked through the formulas and I can't find the one to subtract. I.E. I need a1-a2.

Just type it into the cell that will show the data.
=A1-A2

You need to post the formula and explain the exact steps you took. Just in case: When you want to edit a cell, you can select the cell and press F2 to get into edit mode. After you're in edit mode, the arrows will take you around within the cell. If you want to insert another cell reference into your formula using the arrow keys, press F2 again and then the arrows will move the selection and put the reference where the cursor was. Each time you press F2, you will switch from edit mode, to cell-reference-insert mode. If you have some of your formula selected when you move the selector in cell-ref-insert mode, you will replace whatever was selected.

if you know that each cell has a direction. Column and Row, and every Column has a name ex. A, B, C, D... and every Row has a number Ex. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...
Now with this nomenclature you can select one cell by referencing with Column and Row. A1 (first column and first row)
If you want to substract tow cells you do the next:
=A1-A2
Which means you're going to substract the contents from A1 the contets of A2.
you will always have to start with a = symbol.

Go to your broswer type in " Micorsolt Excel formulas to subtract one cell " hit inter , when the page comes up scroll down to # 5 & # 8 , click on it, there are several choices to pick from. Hope this helps you .

make sure you enter the following in the cell. Make sure you have an "=" sign in the beginning.
=a1-a2

You just need to start formula entry in the cell by typing an equal sign (=) then the formula you already stated !
