I was in my grandfather's funeral processional just yesterday and I was appalled at two people who entered the processional and then honked their horns when we didn't go fast enough. My husband is in law enforcement and stops traffic for these often.
If you are in a vehicle, proper etiquette is to pull to the side of the road whether meeting or going with the traffic of the processional. Only those in the processional should have their headlights on. If you are on the sidewalk, you are to stop and bow your head until they pass. If wearing a hat, men are to remove their hats.

Bowing head, if you are religious: The Sign of the cross blessing, and uttering a little prayer for the dearly departed.
Always if you can move out of the way of the procession. Perhaps this is the best respect you can give them.

In either case, you should pull over to the side of the road and let the procession pass. If you are a pedestrian, you should stop, bow your head and gentlemen should remove their hats.

Don't get in their way. If you want to stop because you consider it respectful, pull completely off the road so you don't hold up drivers behind you who may not be of the same mind.

I think the important thing is NOT to "break" into the procession. Allow the entire procession to pass before continuing. If you're going in the opposite direction or there's no chance of interfering I don't think anything is really expected.
