As others have said, Florence is a must visit - it is one of Europe's great and bustling cities.

One of my other favorites is Sienna which is a smaller and quieter city that is great for walking and shopping.

I love the Amalfi coast so I suggest Positano or south. The mountainous shoreline and crisp clear Mediterranean Sea have a healing effect on the soul.

While Rome can be manic, the roman art and antiquities as well as the Vatican are simply incredible. Finally, while Pompeii sounds like a tourist trap, it is not. It is also a must see and will give you direct insights into the ancient world.

Do not try to see all of Italy in one trip unless you have about a month. Choose a region and linger. If you listen, Italy whispers, "Slow down and savor life."

The Amalfi Coast is fantastic from about May to September. Even when it's hot there is still that ocean breeze. I personally love the island of Ischia, near Naples and Capri. The beaches are beautiful, it's not too touristy and there are hot springs! Also, if you're in the area stop by Paestum (one hour by bus from Salerno) to see beautiful ancient Greek temples with virtually no crowds.

shop
eat gelato(which is a better kind of ice cream)
then dinner
then eat more gelato
and don't worry you wont get fat!!! i ate soo much but in rome you walk like crazy you walk sooo much that you can eat as much as you want
