I have plans to drive from western PA to Montreal tomorrow and it looks like a snowstorm is going to be hitting upstate New York over to the Montreal area. I don't know if I should reserve a room in Syracuse or continue into Canada. Since Canada is used to snow, do they take good care of their roads?

They don't take good care of anything in Montreal...

The gov't will go overbudget because they don't expect snow in winter, so there won't be enough snowcleaners, the remaining snowcleaners will go on strike and demand more money since they have to work hard 3 times a year, and there will be hundreds of car accidents because Montrealers aren't smart enough to realize that it's not safe to go 160 and to cut each other off when the roads are slippery (not that it's very safe any day), the power will go out for weeks even though our electricity comes from our own province, the Montreal Canadiens will move to Washington because there's not point in having a hockey team if they don't make the playoffs every year, several overpasses will collapse because they weren't designed so that cars can drive over them, and the French will want to seperate because somehow this is all the rest of Canada's fault. (Damn you Alberta!)

Despite all this, I bet you anything that my school will be open...

Funny how Toronto is about 4 times the size of Montreal, yet they seem to get these things done right...

Anyways, go to www.theweathernetwork.ca, look for Montreal and look for highway cams. You should be able to see the road conditions for yourself. Enjoy your stay! We love visitors in Quebec, just ask Mario Dumont...

In normal conditions, they get the plows on the highways as soon as there is an inch of snow. You may have to slow down (especially if you have 4 seasons tires instead of winter tires) and the bridges may become "parking lots" around montreal, but they usually take good care. If you do not feel comfortable going over the Saint-Lawrence river on bridges like Champlain Bridges, I recommend using the Lafontaine Tunnel. It may be a small detour, but I know I find it more managable than Champlain on windy days.

The highways and major city streets are the 1st thing on the list for clearing when a snow storm is forecasted, gotta get people to work. It's 2nd nature for us especially in the major cities, Toronto(financial centre), Montreal, Ottawa(Federal Government centre) etc.
