The words "islam"..."salaam"...and "muslim" all have the same root meaning, and that is "peace"; or, more specifically, "Peace attained through oneness with God, by Submission to God."
"Islam" is the Path.
"Muslim" is the Traveler on the Path.
Many have worn the name "Muslim", but that does not change the meaning of the word, for the word was in use before that individual was given it as a name.

a muslim is the follower of islam and the one who submits to one God.
The word “Islam” itself is derived from the Arabic word: “salam”, which means peace. Thus, the word that stands for the religion of God, Islam, it means the peace that can be attained in this life and in the life to come through submitting to God's will. Islam believes that all the prophets taught this very same idea of submitting to one God.
