does anyhere here have one or have teenage children with one. I'm 15 nearly 16 and was born with a cleft lip and palate and have had atleast ten operations and after having ten teeth taken out i decided to put my foot down. i'vem just been told im recommended to have jaw surgery, cos my top teeth are behind my bottom ones.
Has anyone experienced this and knows how bad it is and do you feel the cleft lip and has effected you and your life?

Thanks

Have the jaw surgery; not only will it help your appearance, but it will be much easier to chew and manage your saliva. If they can do the nose and scar revisions at the same time, you may be able to "kill two birds with one stone", so to speak. If you live in the LA area, Dr. Henry Kawamoto is your man-- he's a dentist and plastic surgeon.

i didn't have the cleft lip or palate BUT i did have an upper jaw that never grew. i had orthodontic surgery for that. they did NOT break my jaw, instead he took a part of my hip bone and put it in my upper jaw to bring it forward. My jaw was only wired shut for half the time it would have taken if the lower one had been broken. it's been 21 years since then and i don't regret it. Painful as heck, and turkey dinner through a straw kinda sucked, but in the long run you don't regret it.
I felt horrible about how i looked before hand and the nicknames you get tagged with at school really hurt my feelings back then but i've come out of it stronger and wayyyyyyy more confidant.

my daughter was born with something called rygus syndrome although ,I'm sure i,ve spelt it wrong it is i am told something to do with what you have ,only my daughter never got the hair lip and cleft palate she got a very rare eye deformity which can and did in my daughters case involve glaucoma at a young age .she also has small jaw which is now not too noticeable . she also did not have the correct amount of second teeth. luckily her milk teeth lasted till he was about 14/15 years of age. we had/have a very good dentist who did bridge work on her teeth so now you can not tell the difference . the only sad part in my daughters case is the fact she got glaucoma at the age of 15 years and is now blind in one eye and partly sighted in the other. so do not dispare there are others out thee who like you suffer defects of birth.
