Wheel mouse.
I have a trackball but it doesn't have a wheel so i don't use it.
It was nice being able to stop on a dime and click as hard as you want without moving the pointer. But I use the wheel to zoom. Move the pointer to where you want to go (to or from) as you roll the wheel. Adjust it down to about 40% with the zoomscale command. Drag the wheel to pan your drawing around. Double click to zoom extents. Just keep typing RE to allow more extreme zooming.
I zoom fast now.
Mr. Old School gets dizzy watching.
If you can find one with a quiet wheel, that's even better.
Autocad zooms opposite, so when I go to Inventor and back it takes me an extra spin to get my brain zooming backwards again.

Either a very high resolution optical with quick-adjusting resolution or a track-ball.

I prefer a trackball and am *very* happy with my logitech marble.

The fact that I will not move the cursor when pressing a button to access a menu or select an object has been incredibly helpful.
I've had to use mice and often been frustrated when the mouse moves just a 'tic'.

You can check Extreme Tech for some reviews of 6-axis mice / trackballs that are really useful in this area too, if you are willing to spend a couple hundred bucks on a controller.

I use a standard Microsoft optical mouse. Two buttons + scroll/third button.

I like it because it is hand neutral (i'm left handed) and it works a lot better than old ball mice.

They make fancier mice with extra buttons to let you add functions - but I generally stick to simpler is better. I do a lot of diagrams, details and other stuff (I work in an architectual office doing electrical design), and it is highly important to have my equipment work correctly 100% of the time. 'Features' usually end up being problematic.

Track ball has always been a favorite of mine when working with drawings; zooming in and out all the time.

I use just a standard mouse with laser instead of a roller ball.
