Yes they can receive SSI as well as Medi-caid benefits..

Ignore all the answers that do not think children can be on SSI. SSI, unlike Social Security Disability, has absolutely nothing to do with work credits. What that means is you don't need to have EVER had worked a day in your life to qualify for SSI..

I don't know if a child can or not, since isn't SSI disability income supposed to be a supplement to income you miss when you're unable to work? A child wouldn't be losing an income.

Look into long-term disability insurance, to cover any medical costs you have related to the autism.

Maybe it depends on the family's income. Check your local SS Office. And regional center, even if you can not get SSI you should be able to get speech therapy and other help. I have a son who has Aspergers syndrome a form of autism. Get the stolen child one of my fave books for parents of kids with autism.
Good luck

yes, but I've heard it's not easy. I found this:
For children, see 12.10/112.10: The definition of an Autistic Disorder requires a " markedly restricted repertoire of activities and interests," a phrase repeated in A.1.c; 112.03, the children's schizophrenia Listing, that requires a " marked disturbance of thinking feeling and behavior"; 112.04, the children's mood disorder Listing which requires " markedly diminished interest or pleasure" at two separate places, and at 112.11, the ADHD Listing that requires marked inattention, impulsiveness, hyperactivity and then refers the adjudicator to the B criteria to make further findings of two more marked functional limitations.

It depends. And can kids be on disability? I thought disability was payment if you were unable to work, but could be wrong. In any case, here's the URL to the government site where they even have a screening tool to help answer first line questions...
