The program limewire itself is not a virus, but the potential to download a virus or any type of possible problem can be very real. Your question seems more directed toward not the program, but perhaps to the type of files that you can download?P2P file sharing is an enjoyable aspect to getting different files to friends, relatives, or even to people in general.

When you connect to the network - you are connecting into gnutella. Your query reaches out across different nodes - ultimately ending with the search results you see displayed across your screen when you use Limewire. Each prospective result can come from someone elses shared file that is not blocked or behind a firewall. Why it is also important that if you use services such as Limewire for file sharing that you might want to reciprocate and share the same files you have downloaded from from that source. Before ever opening a file that is downloaded or used - please use up to date virus / trojan / spyware software to scan the files to make sure that you are not infecting your computer with some surprise that you really don't want. Its is possible to filter out certain file types and misleading information depending on the type of file that you are seeking.

Many of the P2P programs such as Kazaa do have spyware and adware issues associated with them, and I would use caution when using such. They can hijack your browser, and add in tool bars and such that you may not want or be aware of until after you have installed the program.

P2P file sharing also has copyright issues associated with the files that are shared, so reading up and being aware of which types of files are legal for sharing also helps. Limewire itself has a decent forum board that has quite a bit of information on how to change your search parameters and different tips and tricks to use - very helpful. If you need more information on how the gnutella network works.. there is a link associated with this that explains how gnutella works.

Limewire itself does not have viruses, but some things you download could potentially have viruses or other things. It is important to check the file type of the things you are downloading. You shouldn't have any issues with just downloading music, but be really careful, especially with programs that you download. Limewire will alert you when a file could potentially be harmful.

Make sure you have virus protection on your computer, and it will be fine.

I've heard that it has adware - a code within the downloading program used by Limewire to track where you go and what you do on your computer. They say its to help gear advertisements toward the type of sites you go to.

Otherwise, it may be possible to inadvertently download viruses through the files you receive from other users. Though, most anti-virus software should detect it.

Limewire doesn't have any viruses, but ALL the stuff that you download from it could very well have viruses.

The person above mentioned that music doesn't, but I can guarantee you that you will eventually get a virus from music files.

Tons. It also leaves you vulnerable to lawsuits for copyright infringement. Here are a few articles on the subject:
