I have seen pictures of Jewish families celebrating Passover with the Seder meal. The pictures are of the moment when the youngest child is asking the 4 questions. All the adults at the table have books open next to their plates.
What are these books?
And why are they there?

It's called a Haggadah. It contains the questions and answers, the entire ritual for the seder meal. It can be a simple booklet, or an elaborately illustrated volume. It's the "script", you might say, for a proper Passover observance.

The haggadah is simply the ceremony of the seder written out, and the family is following it.

the book is called a haggadah. it basically guides the family through the rituals of the seder, the exodus story, and may give commentaries about deeper meanings behind everything said and done. you can get all kinds of different themed ones. there is one at my library by elie wiesel and its very childish-themed. its cute.
