Don't go up to them all googly eyed and stuttering. Just talk to them as if you were talking to your best friend - It needs to be natural. Don't try to get all fancy with the conversation just to impress them - it will usually come across the wrong way. Talk about something you know you have in common. Compliment something about them or what they do. Talk about something you know they like to do - it puts them in their comfort zone and they will usually open up the conversation. Maybe ask a guy to explain something about a rule in sports - guys are always comfortable talking about sports. Once he's comfortable talking, you can switch subjects. Just be confident and smile.
