I would recommend a boxer. While larger, they have a very steady temper and aren't prone to be as possessive of your time as some breeds. In short they don't get jealous as badly as some other breeds. Wonderful family dogs and easily trained. Ours does and always has put up with anything the kids every dealt out, from the rough play to the accidental ear pulling. He even suffered through the indignity of being in a baby stroller and dressed up for tea parties with no complaint.

Please do not bring a puppy into your home yet.
Puppies require more attention than a new born (they can run and chew on anything unlike a newborn)
Having both would put an incredible strain on your newly formed family and either the baby (unlikely) or the puppy (more likely) will suffer from it.

I would suggest waiting a few years to bring a puppy into your home or look into rescuing an older dog that is already good with kids.

And Goldens Labs and Cockers are not Protective breeds. Don't be fooled bysome of the ignorance on this site and ALWAYS research things for yourself.

Well you're looking for one with an even temperment, patience, likes small children, and is relatively low maintenance. I would recommend something smaller since the bigger breeds (i.e. labs, retrievers) while excellent dogs, have high exercise requirements, and if you can't give them that they will get restless and mischevious. I personally think a dog like a Boston Terrier or Pug would be a good fit since they have great little personalities and are very easy going around children. In addition, they have small exercise requirements and while they love their people very much, can be independent. Also, the Boston is particularly easy to train because of their high level of intelligence. Hope this is helpful and congratulations on the baby!

That sounds like a perfect environment for most dog breeds, espeically with the good sized yard. I would recommend something along the lines of a Cocker Spaniel or Labrador/Golden Retriever. These are medium sized to large dogs that can provide good protection without begin to huge to handle. They also tend to have a very mild temperment making them ideal family dogs. All dogs can be sweet hearts, don't get me wrong, but from my experience, these dogs in particular do great with all members of the family, including the little ones. Hope this helps!

I am not going to say don't get a dog, however I am going to say don't get a dog NOW. Trust me, you need a ton of time and attention for a dog, and right now you need to be giving your baby all of the attention. I would wait until your little one is at least 2 or 3 before even considering it!
Seriously, think about a different sort of pet that doesn't require too much time!

NO puppy would be good when you have a newborn. I'd wait until your baby is a little older. It takes an unbelievable amount of time to properly raise a puppy.

Now, if you want to adopt an older dog, than have at it! But, beware that the first week after you take your new dog home might be a bit rough for you and the dog.

If I were you, I'd definitly wait for a dog.

A small dog, When i was a baby we had a cocker spaniel and it bit me and we ended up having to put it to sleep. So i dont think that would be the best choice. Now i have a bichon frise and she is the best dog i have ever seen, im not just saying this, she is so good with everyone. she is very loving and loves attention, she also knows when to play and when to relax. I have a newborn cousin and she loves him, she is very gentle with him and is very motherly and protective to him. I know a few other people who have one and it is the same! they are amazing dogs! and they are unbelievibly cute!!

I would say a pug. I am kind of partial though. Pugs were bred to be lap dogs on the great Emperors laps in China. They are calm, dosile, loving and so so cute. We have a 4 mo. old new baby girl, and also 2 pugs. They are both so great with her. She can pull at their ears and tail and they don't even flinch. They just stand there and take it. Pugs are very self sufficient. Both of ours were house trained within 2 weeks of getting them. Good luck!! Hope the info was helpful.

I would go with a small, sturdy, tolerant, non-aggressive breed, such as a Boston terrier, or Pug..Cavalier King Charles are also great fun..If you are wanting a larger breed, I would recommend a Golden retriever...

My best advice, is like what I was raised with. A mixed breed short haired dog. If you get them as a puppy, then they'll grow together with the baby, usually becoming protective of the baby. I wish you the best of luck.
