I don't know but I do know that the priests at my church rely on donations to live or a measly salary because they took a vow of frugality. I only wish the Pope would do the same.

Tithes and offerings are not that much, actually. As said before, the average for Catholic donations is lower than for protestants. That's partially because the Catholic church has spent so long assisting impovershed people (such as ministries in Africa) who cannot afford to make donations at all.

That being said, the Catholic church is one of the largest charitable organizations in the world, and gives more to charity every year than any other religious organization. How can they afford to do so?

1) contrary to popular belief, Priests, Bishops, and the Pope are not wealthy at the hands of the church. They live off of a very meager salary and are "on the job" 24/7. They OWN very little, often times not even the car that they drive. When they leave a parish/retire/die almost everything they owned is returned to the church for issue to another priest.

2) The buildings the church holds are mostly proprietary. The only cost for most of the magnificent midievil churches (that people like to moan about) is maintenance fees. By that same note, some of the great churches are worldwide attractions and to visit them often brings in donations which MORE than pay the maintenance fees. The leftover goes to help with administrative and maintenance costs of churches still in use for general worship that may not pull in enough from donations to cover their reasonably low operating expenses.

3) The catholic church was smart enough to invest it's money. A large portion of the church's investment lies in real estate, but there is a large portfolio of each diocese's investements and the annual returns defray any leftover operating expenses as well as provides a large sum of money which is then donated to charity.

Each parish operates financially independent of other churches. If the donations at a single church are down, it does not get donations or financial help from other churches. So obviously, churches in poor neighborhoods do not do as well as churches in richer neighborhoods.

In fact, much of the donations of a single church goes to support the ministries run at the diocese level.

In 2001, Protestants in the United States donated an average of $1,093 to their churches in 2001. That figure was more than double the average amount given by Catholics to their churches, $495. Part of this can be accounted for by the fact that there are many poor Catholics.

Protestant churches are MUCH richer than Catholic churches.
