Acording to the "Washington Post",they belong to a certain sect of Islam that forbids this.

Here it is in the USA Today:

-----
Minneapolis-St. Paul is concerned that its taxi service is deteriorating. Citing their religious beliefs, some Muslim taxi drivers from Somalia are refusing to transport customers carrying or suspected of carrying alcohol. It started with one driver a few years ago, but the average number of fare refusals has grown to about three a day, says airport spokesman Patrick Hogan. "Travelers often feel surprised and insulted," he says. "Sometimes, several drivers in a row refuse carriage."

Taxi drivers and officials from the airport, taxi companies and the Muslim American Society are discussing how to address the issue. Partly out of concern that taxi drivers might be citing religion to avoid short-distance fares, the airport is now forcing drivers who refuse a fare to go to the end of the line for waiting taxis. It is not a popular decision among drivers, Hogan says. ...

Someone gave me a "thumbs down" for simply posting a newspaper article that said something about "Muslins" and "Islam". Strange.

Several reasons. One being THE LAW. It is unlawful to have open containers of alcohol (whether you're the driver or not) in a car. It is also the policy of the taxi company or, if they're independent drivers, they could get their car impounded and license yanked. Two words ---- The Law!

Hm, I hadn't heard of this before. I could understand how people don't want passengers with open containers of alcohol, but that they don't want anyone who carries any or is even suspected of carrying any in a bag, that's ridiculous. I wonder if they also refuse to carry women without a veil? Or whether they'd take you if you gave the address of a bar as your destination? A Christian church? What if you're wearing a cross or ankh or pentagram as jewelry? What if you carried smokes, isn't smoking against moslim beliefs too?

My understanding is that some Muslim taxi drivers don't want liquor in their cabs because they believe it's wrong to drink alcohol.

I wouldn't want a drunk passenger to take out a gun and blow my head off...

also, he may start drinking in the car and drinking while driving or being a passenger in a moving car is illegal. the driver don't want to be arrested 'cuz of a stupid passenger.

Never heard of this.

As long as the alcohol is not opened and in a bag - how would they know that it is alcohol?? I don't drink alcohol and bring my own water to parties in a bag.

Surely you would not be required to be searched.
