My hair has been the same color for 7 years already. I love it dark, but I know I need a change. So, I want subtle highlights that will keep it dark.

Hi!

Since you want to keep your hair dark, I would suggest warm highlights like caramel. Those will blend nicely and give your hair dimension. I've also seen some women with burgundy highlights. Those look very nice on dark hair and also add a little "oomph" to your look.

I would suggest you go to a professional but if you want to do it yourself, I've seen several highlighting kits that will give you as much or as little highlighting you want. They've come a long way with prepackaged hair coloring! Just make sure it will bleach out your hair first before coloring as you have very dark hair and will look brassy if you go too light.

There is also the temporary route. I've also seen those at the drugstore. You can try it out and see if you like it.

Go for it! :)

Okay first of all at least ever six weeks you will have to color your hair. My question is are you going to do this yourself of have a professional do it? If you have a professional I say foil high lights. If you are doing it HOW dark is your hair? If it's almost black DO NOT do it yourself it will turn orange. Also about ever 6 months you will have to completly start over with your dark color again. So this is a lot of up keep and if you are willing to up keep your hair by all means it's almost spring and that means LIGHTEN up the colors and start high lights or low lights. And fall is darken it up and give your color a rest. So hope that helps.

I have dark brown hair too, and my hair stylist usually foils in two different colors of highlights and she uses a golden blonde and a caramel color (like the color of a penny). she never puts a lot of highlights in though, just a few on the top layer...i love it that way because it just looks natural but not all one color.

Hhmm...putting a dull red highlights would look nice and would give it some change without it looking drastic,or you could try doing blond because I have brown hair and I did some blond and a little red and it looked really nice. But make sure its a dull red you don't want anything to bright! Hope it helps.

if you have blonde hair this will naturally get bleached by the actual sun in the summer. There had been this guy in my class who else had golden blonde hair that had been a medium brown near the bottom. When he came back to college after summer vacation, it was almost platinum blonde!
