How do you get a toddler to poop in the potty?

My son will be 3 yrs. old in May. He is doing very well with the peeing in the potty. He tells me when he needs to go. On the other hand, he refuses to poop in the potty. In fact I walked out of the bathroom this morning to give him some privacy and instead of pooping in the potty he pooped beside his little potty. I don't know what to do about this anymore. Please give me some ideas....

This may sound kind of weird, but I bribed our son (now 11) when we potty trained him. He was about the same age as your child. Every time he peed in the potty, I filled his PEZ dispenser. And every time he pooped in the potty, he got a Hot Wheel. I bought one of those 5 packs of Hot Wheels and in 3 days, he was potty trained. Honestly, I think he was more ready to be potty trained than we realized. But I believe in a small reward for major accomplishments and using the potty, even though it is something he MUST learn to do, is a BIG DEAL for kids. So a small prize or treat when he acts like a big boy is well-deserved.

I can see some people suggesting that rewarding kids for something like that is a bad thing and may make for greedy kids who want a prize for completing things that are a part of every day life. I disagree. My son has grown up to be a very UNSELFISH child. I now have a 2 yr. old boy that will be ready to potty train in the next 12 months, I'm sure, and I intend to reward him as well.

My mom bought one of those potty training toilets for my niees and nephews that plays a song when something hits the bottom. lol sounds grose but kids love that kind of stuff. We got it at walmart and it wasnt expensive at all. And its true, biribery does work with small kids!

Your going to have to time how regualry he goes and start to sit him on there when its about time! Try reading with him on it so its not an unpleasent experiece for him. He doesn't need privacy!xx
