whatever you do, do not give your dog any type of human medicine (i.e. ibuprofens or aspirins) because they can do a lot of damage to the dogs system. They are developed for humans and can be very harmful to your dog. I am also the owner of an older sheltie (12 yo) and I really sympathize with you. Hope everything works out!

Yeah well enough people people have said it she needs a painkiller of some sort...Its very sad but arthritis runs in this breed an unfortunate side effect of the close tight breeding that was done to achieve these lovable little dogs

Try giving your Sheltie some MSM. (methylsulfonylmethane) I've used this and it works really well. It is specifically for arthritis in animals. The link to their website is below.

Give her a good chondroitin/Glucosamine supplement. Also a heated bed will comfort her a lot. You can get both items at any pet supply.
Sometimes the supplement is cheaper at livestock supply stores.
this is an eceptionally good supplement> http://springtimeinc.com/product/94/2

Accupuncture and chiropractic can help with no drugs involved. You can do a google search for veterinarians that have holistic practices in your area.

Swim therapy is also an option. Many holistic vets have warm water pools.

When we had our Sheltie and she went through that, cortizone shots seemed to temporarily relieve her pain. However, it got to the point where it seemed like we were making her suffer needlessly.

OH Please put her to sleep!
My Lab was 14 and she would stumble down the stairs to the back yard then just stand there for minuets. She used to run the fence line and poop in one corner but not after that.
I can imagine how lonely it must been for her not to be able to run.
