I am assuming your biggest complaint is the litter scatter?
If so I have a creative solution that has worked for me in the past for cats who throw too much litter.
I used a transparent clear storage container from Sterlite or Rubbermaid, with a lid. I cut a rectangle hole through the lid and drilled tons of dime size holes in the rest of the lid.
You will need to put cat into this new litterbox at first and use some of the used litter from the old box to start.
She can dig for hours and no litter scatter. She will not be scared to go into it if it is transparent for lighting. The dime size holes on the lid will help with litter left on the feet while she walks across the lid the litter falls off the feet through the holes and go right back into the litter box below the lid. Like a grid.
Now this will only work if she will use it so please in the beginning maybe leave both boxes just until you see she will use. You do not want to have her refuse it and use the floor instead. If you need photos of what I am suggestion please email and I will email you some.

As others have said, you could try doing the toilet training thing, getting a special litter box with a flap or lip around the edge, or put it in a closet or some other covered place.
Something that might be part of the problem though is that your litterbox is just too small. I recently read about someone getting one of those big tupperwear storage containers and just using that as a HUGE litterbox. You use more litter to fill it up at first, but you just need to clean out the spots that it uses and in the long run you usually have fewer problems with litter getting kicked out of the box. Of course, if your space is limited that's not practical.
Here's a really good site on toilet training your kitty: http://www.karawynn.net/mishacat/toilet.html Depending on your cat, they'll pick up on it in a few weeks.

I have a cat who seems to try and dig itself to China. I replaced the box the with type with a lip around it. It was not very expensive, and catches almost all the litter he throws. I guess cleaning up after kittie is a commitment you made when you chose to become a responsible pet owner. I would hope you would give it some patience, and try to work threw this. I,m sure the two of you can work this out. At least he/she is using the litter box.

I know of a cat that uses the toilet so it is possible...But try putting a litter grabbing mat in front of the litterbox, that helps a little.

Hmmm,...they have mats for that - but I know they don't always work that great. Look for specialty liter boxes - some have options built in to reduce it. I don't think you can get rid of it completely - sorry. It's just one of those things that comes with owning an animal.
Wait a minute!!! There is somethign called a Tack Mat. We use them at work and get them online at any hospital supply website. It's a mat that is made of 30 peices of "film" and it's sticky. One step on it and it will pull all the liter off her paws. She won't notice that it's sticky - that's the great things about them. At night, pull off the sheet to reveal the clean one for the next day.

You could invest in one of those expensive litter boxes that cleans itself.. Then you won't have to.... I guess you don't have a garage or basement you could put the littler box in? Or maybe outside? If not... go to google. com
type in litter box and then click on self cleaning litter box. You will see a picture of one and you can order it from that website.
good luck

get a dome litter box or one with a plastic flap as a door. or just hot glue a sheet of flexible plastic big enough to cover the opening and small enough to move freely in and out.

Apparently, cats aren't too difficult to potty train. However if you choose not to go that route, I have found that my cat learned to open the broom closet door to access his litterbox and that works well for us.
