Well I'm a Christian and I don't worship 3 god's. My God is just God. Jesus is His form on earth as man and the Holy Spirit is His form as a spirit. That's all there is to it.

In my opinion, there is not a better way of wanting to learn what other people believe in, but to honestly want to know...
I mean don't try to think of one question, or one line of questioning to get people to tell you something. You have to be sincere, and listen to what they say. Sure, starting off religious discussions can sometimes be tense, and a bit uneasy, but it really doesn't have to be. As long as you honestly and sincerely want to know their opinion, and state that, it should be no different that asking someone for virtually anything.
After they share their opinion with you, bu sure not to criticize, or berate them. After all, for the most part people are free to express whatever kind of religion suits them.
I like the basic beliefs angle, but don't be too specific. Let them run with that, first, then LISTEN to what they say, and go from there.
Good luck.
Stevo.

Tell them you would like to understand their beliefs, and then let them do the talking. If you disagree, remember, everyone is free to have their own opinions, so be kind and accepting of theirs too.

I would say 2 - - there are many things that people don't understand about religion in general, let alone each individual one.
