People do get so dependent on our tools that we forgfet how to live without them.

I was a cashier for several years & found people to be shocked that I could tell them their change before I punched it into the register. ($17.58 paid with a $20. That's $2.42 change)

I've experienced cashiers totally baffled if you give them change after they already run it up. ($2.42 is the change and I give them 8 cents. That makes my change $2.50)

Not that I propose we throw away our tools. But we should challange ourselves more often.

Estimate your total before you get to the register.
Estimate your tax (99cents to every $12 here)
When the cashier gives you your total, figure your change before you give the cashier the cash.

I disagree that calculators have eliminated the need for skills, simply because calculators are not always available. On several occasions I've been at a restaurant or small business at a time when the computerized cash register is malfunctioning. It's a terrible, terrible thing to watch some poor clerk or waitress try to total an order, only to be stumped by basic multiplication (let's see... five cups of coffee at 85 cents each... umm... man, I hate it when the register's on the fritz!) and heaven forbid they have to calculate sales tax!

I'm a consultant for a party-plan business and recently had my calculator run out of batteries during the order-taking. I felt bad for being unprepared; I can't imagine how embarrassed I'd be if I hadn't been able to properly calculate my customers' totals without it.

Calculators are fine tools, but will never completely eliminate the need for the human brain.
