What about the VSO. Voluntary Service Overseas. Or maybe Oxfam. With Comic Relief coming up, you could look into see if they have some sort of volunteer programme attached.

I guess you were given a few good websites worthy to be checked out.

When you say that it cost tonnes, Do you mean that they even charge money to be a volunteer?

Perhaps you may want to look at Volunteer Match at http://www.volunteermatch.org and you will find a lot of volunteer opportunities around the world.

The list is quite extensive, so it will take you some time to go through all the listed organizations. There is also another site: http://www.idealist.org . This one too may be helpful in finding a volunteer opportunity for you.

1. Maybe you could help out in the Philippines ... here are two orphanage charities that need a builder.
a) Subic Bay Children's Home
A small charity, just an American/Filipina couple who lost their home, church and a Children's Home, as a result of a volcanic eruption. They are struggling to rebuild what they lost.

b) Mount Zion Orphanages Inc.
Another American/Filipina couple that started a fish delivery business to fund the building of an orphanage, but lost the truck and the fish load in an accident on the very first trip. They now finally have the opportunity to finally build.

2. You would need to make contact, and see what the entry requirements are. I am sure that you would be looked after (accommodation & food), and maybe you could get supplementary income with jobs on the side.

You have scope to work in rural India.
It is a place near Mumbai, the economic capital of India.
You will have to speak to the organizers.
I am forbidden to give any email contacts as it is against the community guidelines of yahoo answers
"He is a wise man who builds a house with the bricks people throw at him." - I remembered this quote. The learned scholar of Vedanta Chinmayanand said this.

Wishing you luck in all your noble endeavors.
