Get him off dry food and onto eating a good quality canned food.
By feeding dry food, you're basically feeding carbs and the WRONG kind of protein to a carnivore. It's no wonder many cats get fat on dry food. Not only that, but they tend to be dehydrated. Cats are meant to get moisture in their food, not by drinking.
Supermarket brands (except perhaps Whole Foods or Trader Joe's) aren't much good. You'll want to buy your foods at a pet store. One of the links below is a list of the very best canned foods you can buy. I personally use Natural Balance Venison & Green Pea.
It can be tricky to make the switch - some cats go right for it and some take convincing. For me, it took two weeks but it was worth the trouble.

An indoor cat can stay an prolonged time so 10 years old is now no longer seen senior--you may desire to be having the vet do a blood panel each and every twelve months (alongside with the familiar annual wellbeing examine-up and enamel cleansing) to envision for white blood cells in the blood indicating something is faulty, liver & kidney function, etc. so which you will capture something early that is beginning. otherwise, communicate along with your vet with regard to the cat's gum situations which will make certain no count if she needs nutrition extremely made to help cut back plaque buildup. the two my cats are 11 years old and their nutrition bowl is saved packed with Purina One for grownup cats (no longer senior), Purina Cat Chow Indoor formulation, and Hill's t/d formulation (can in basic terms be gotten from the vet and is approximately $15/4 lb. bag) that's for his or her enamel; additionally they share a small can of Fancy ceremonial dinner on each and every occasion one in all them asks for some (they take a seat in the kitchen the place their moist nutrition bowl in many cases is located and meow loudly). My cats are not exhibiting any adverse stuff of their bloodwork and the vet mentioned this mixture is stable. each and every now and then our lady cat will regurgitate the Hill's t/d nutrition at which era we offer up feeding them that for a pair of days (it has a some distance richer scent then the extra value-effective dry nutrition so i think of it has a extra suited protein point which her digestive gadget will possibly no longer have the potential tolerate each and all of the time even however they love the tastiness). you may desire to communicate on your vet approximately what ingredients he/she recommends to your cat's needs.

Grocery store brand foods are horrible for any pet. They have very poor nutritional values! Please go to the pet store and get a high quality senior or adult cat formula. Royal Caine is a great cat food!! Not to hip on Imas or science diet though (sorry) Nutros, pinnacle and Avodrem are also great cat foods!!!
By the way your cat dose not need canned food everyday!! That is why he is getting fat! Can food should only be used as a treat!! My 2 cats eat Royal Caine Indoor formula and get canned food as a treat about twice a week. (they share one small can) Both have shiny beautiful coats!!!

My 20 year-old siamese just passed away from cancer. When she was about 10, I started feeding her Purina One Senior Formula. It is easier on their digestive system and reduces the ammonia smell from their urinary tract. She was very, very healthy until the last two years of her life. What a cat! I got her in college and she went all over the world with me. Take care of yours and you'll have a lot more time together.

Purina One makes a "Naturals" line which is very healthy for cats. Since yours is already used to the regular Purina One, this might be a good alternative that will be healthier, but still easy for him to make the transition.

I would use iams cat food. It is a little more expensive than most cat food but it is not full of fillers like other cat foods. I think it is worth the expense. As well as they have a weight control formula. Try it.

I prefer Science Diet or Royal Canin. Both are great foods for cats, and they should help maintain your cat's correct weight.
