Industrial engineering is commonly referred to "imaginary engineering" in college engineering departments because of IE's lack of content.

Industrial engineering forgoes the essentials of mechanical or manufacturing engineering, and instead focuses more on business issues. Design and modeling is gives way to inventory forecasting and control. System integration and productivity yields to supply chain issues.

In short, those of us who suffered through real engineering had no respect for the industrial engineering clowns. There was an assumed hierarchy of engineering, and for the students that couldn't hack engineering, industrial (imaginary) engineering was the lowest rung before dropping to a finance major.
