So, I have this dream that I am hoping to develop into a plan in the next few yeard- backpacking around the globe: Beginning somewhere, staying there long as I like, then move on somewhere else, hopefully finding jobs on the way. I am ready to face cultural shock, extreme poverty and other conditions. The problem is, I have no idea how it works out with the bureucracy, visas and all. Has anyone done something similar? Where can I find more information? Do you think I need to have a strict plan and stick to it, or can I do as I wish?? Thanks in advance...

For more info go to a real traveller's site:

http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com
http://www.travellerspoint.com

These forums are specialised for people who are backpacking, some of them around the world.

Round the world flights:

Visa:

http://www.immigration.govt.nz

For the visa requirements in all the 150+ countries in the world, use google. "Name of country" plus visa usually gives the answer pretty quick.

Watch out for these pesky Schengen rules in Europe:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Visa

"...For citizens of countries not party to the Schengen Agreement, restrictions exist that govern the length of one's stay within the Schengen area. The general rule stipulates a maximum 90-day stay within a 180-day period beginning from the first day of entry. ..."

You can find more info on Schengen visa rules in my posts in the Europe forum of www.travellerspoint.com

Hope I helped a bit.

Really pretty easy. Talk to a travel agent about the various visas for the countries you want to visit. I spent the last 2 years traveling the world, and didn't have any real issues with visas, though I didn't have any working visas. In terms of a strict plan, you can try, but I will guarantee that your trip will not go according to it. Trip's have minds and lives of their own, "you don't take a trip, a trip takes you." If you are going backpacking, you'll find the following tips useful.

If you are lost, in danger and need help, then read a few survival stories before you get into this situation. Remembering true stories about how others have surmounted the crisis can motivate you in a dangerous situation. Motivate your group members by sharing these stories with them.

If necessary, get a dental checkup done, before embarking on a long backpacking trip. An irritating toothache can lead to unbearable pain quickly and can spoil the trip for all.

Evaporative heat loss occurs due to evaporation of moisture from your body or clothes (hence your body sweats to cool off). To minimize this type of heat loss, keep yourself dry as far as possible. Cover yourself in your rain gear while walking through the marshes and avoid sitting directly on snow.

Begin hiking at a pace that is slower than your regular to warm up.....
