it all depends on the amount of recoil on a shotgun u want. for example,if u can withstand the recoil of a 12 gauge and are feeling gutsy about shooting it then get a 12 gauge. if u want a fair amount of recoil, id go with a 20 gauge. u can have a better chance of hitting your target because there is 20 pieces of shot. however, the drawback with a 20 is the fact that it doesn't reach out as far as a 12, and, even if it did, it wouldn't have the knockdown power of a 12. so in a way, your kind of limited to your shots. 20 gauges are very fun to shoot. I'm going to shoot a 12 gauge in a few weeks for the first time, but still, i say 12

It's all a matter of what your are hunting. I think the 12 gauge is preferable, but some people do better with the 20 gauge, which has less recoil. This is particularly important for second shots.

If it's your first gun and you haven't shot a lot, I would go with a Remington Express 870 in 20 gauge.

easy question. best all around fit the bill take care of everything shotgun is the 12 gauge. if a person can only afford one gun and has to do all with one gun the 12 is the answer. maximum choices of loads and hunting situations. The ammo is priced right etc etc. if you can afford 2 guns and want a specialized field gun/clay gun and you feel you have become a good target shooter get a 20 in an O/U it will be a blast.

I think a 12 gauge because it is more powerful than a 20 gauge but a 20 gauge is nice for short distance for small animal but a 12g kills it with a smaller shot a 20g is the same (both shot size). Well hoped I helped.

It depends on what your using this shotgun for.
Most small to medium bird or mammal the 20 gauge is more then enough.
For Deer and Turkey or Goose I would use a 12 gauge.
For shooting clays I prefer a 20 gauge but others use a 12 gauge.
For home defense I prefer 12 gauge but either will work well.

Tex aced it. I was going to say, "If you can handle the recoil the .12 gauge beats the .20 gauge everytime." But he came up with the best answer.

I think it's personal preference. I know guys who hunt with pheasants and other upland game with 20ga and do quite well. I wouldn't want to hunt geese with one. Need all the pellets you can for geese. Also, better to use a 12ga for deer slugs.
