I've just noticed something kind of recently and I wonder if anyone else has had the same experience. I don't understand what the correlation would be but here goes..........

How come when I'm very constipated I become depressed and anxious? I'm not in pain or anything, but I've noticed that I'm very sluggish and my thinking is very negative. I feel like there's just too many problems and I don't know what to do. When I'm no longer constipated I feel almost giddy and lighthearted. I feel energetic and active.

Anyone?

Thanks all of you for the really good insight. I'll go and look at the sites. I sit at a computer all day long during the week and I don't have a great diet either - no wonder I feel like cr*p!

It is apparently a fairly common problem with those who suffer from constipation (especially if it is chronic). It may just have to do with the body's natural rhythm being thrown off. The range of side effects of constipation include: bloating, poor digestion, gas, fatigue, weight gain, poor concentration, headaches, poor skin, poor memory, and epression.

According to one website: The human body, when plugged up, lacks energy and in some cases, shows symptoms of more serious problems such as depression. - http://www.netbros.com/ConstipationCuresAndRemedies

Also, it can go the other way too. If you have underlying depression, that can cause constipation due to stress.

Note: Although people often worry about it, there is no reason to believe that constipation causes a “poisoning” of the system. You may feel sluggish and bloated, but there is no evidence that bugs or any toxins leak from your bowel into any other part of the body. It is a good way for people to convince you to get "colon cleansing" (hydrotherapy) though. "Current alternative medicine practitioners recommend it for a variety of ills stemming from accumulation of fecal matter in the large intestine, a process referred to as autointoxication (a theory no longer accepted in mainstream medicine)." That being said, of course it is necessary to empty your bowels, fecal impaction can cause other problems besides supposed "autointoxication". Cos when you're constipated you still have all those toxins and waste material sitting in your digestive tract festering and poisoning (for want of a better word) your system. All that rubbish is simply getting reabsorbed back into your body via your blood stream and getting retransported around your system !!! No wonder we get all foggy and in a cr*ppy mood. Sorry, sounds a bit gross.

PEACE

maybe is because you are worried that you have a problem and feel helpless, that could be stressing you.
ask your doc next time you see him/her. For sure is not normal I don't experience that condition but I'm sure there is a treatment for constipation and depression as well.
Good luck to you...
inhale, exhale at least ten times at the time that might help you a little.

It's the weight off your... ahem... mind.
Your system is generally running a bit sluggish, and your gut is full of junk. No wonder you don't feel too good.
You're in good company, though. When my dog's constipated and then gets relief, she suddenly perks up and bounces off, tail wagging!

The "stuff" in your intestinal tract when you can't go to the bathroom is toxic. This is literally poisoning your system. Make sure you get adequate fiber in your diet. Start the day with oatmeal or some cereal which states that it is high in fiber, like fiber one. See the list of fiber rich foods and incorporate them in your diet. Drink lots of water too which helps speed things along. As for the depression it may be a coincidence or not. Don't watch TV or movies with violence and tragedy, try to stick with comedy and "feel good" stuff for a while. Your mood will really improve.
