Jacksfullhouse, you're a funny guy.

I think best the camera in your price range is the Canon Powershot A540. You can find it "everywhere" for about $170. I've recommended this camera within my own family, so I'll be living with the results of this recommendation right along with you. You can use the rest of your budget to buy a decent memory card.

Go here and read an extensive review:

Check the sample images, too.

This will blow your mind. The A530 is now discontinued, but it was the "little brother" to the A540.

Canon just introduced the A550, which has more pixels, but offers less user control. I'd be happy with the A540.

You will need to add a memory card and I suggest the Sandisk or Lexar brand in any speed. You will spend from about $20 for a 512 KB card, which is perfectly adequate, to about $40 for a Sandisk Ultra II, which is as good as you'd ever want for this or many other cameras.

Consider the Canon PowerShot A530. It has 5 megapixels 4X optical zoom. Runs about $160 + a memory card SHOULD get you in below $200-
Also consider the Fugifilm FinePix A500. 5 megapixels, 3X optical zoom. can be bought between $90-to $100 + memory card.
More money usually buys better construction of camera, better lens quality (but not always). More money buys more optical zoom say to 12X optical. Quicker response between shots (but that's not always the case either). More money buys more megapixels. But for enlarging to 5X7 and 8X10, 4 to 6 megapixels is sufficient. Well I tried, but Dr. Sam is the expert. The A 530 must have gotten discontinued very recently.

I have learn that if you want to take pictures in the dark, you would want a camera that charges the flash fast. I had an older Casio camera and it takes about 10sec for each charge. I have to tell people to hold the pose for 10+secs.lol. what a pain.

I would recommend the Canon SD600 or the Canon SD630. The SD600 is older but it has a great chip for quality pics. Search the internet and you can find it for about 200. SD630 has a great big screen for viewing. But will set you back for another 50$.

A Canon Powershot is very good. There are differant models so you can get on in the price range you want. Most have video with sound. They are good cameras with better pictures than the little rink-dinks with plastic lenses (8 mega-pixels mean absolutely nothing.)
