It was Colonel Reed of the 2nd Cavalry Group (today's 2nd Armored Cavalry regiment) with the permission of General Patton. The Americans were aided by German troops from the 11th Panzer-Division. Both Germans and Americans rode and hearded the animals through American lines. Neither the Germans or the Americans wanted to see these beautiful animals turned into plow horses by the Russians.

there is an awesome movie made by disney that re inacts the story. I don't know how historcally accurate it is, but it is cool to watch. It's called "The Miracle of The White Stallions" i know circut city has it if you order it online, but that's about the only place i've been able to find it. Really old movie, but a piece of disney's classic work.
