bat-eye.

Think of batting your eyelid!

Having seen a few subsequent replies, I would emphasise that the "t" is only pronounced once!

But-eye with the emphasis on the eye. I once knew a boy on our French exchange called Sebastian Bataille! What a funny memory you've triggered!

Think of the English word 'bat' (or 'but'), followed by the English word 'eye', followed by a sort of 'yuh' sound at the end. The stress is on the second syllable ('eye'). Well, that's how they would say it in carefully spoken educated French. In rapid speech, French people tend to drop the 'yuh'.

'a' is like in 'father', not 'fat'.
The first syllable is open (i.e., ba, not bat).
Stress is on the second syllable.

pronunciation: bah-TIE
