Cooked Rice is a good alternative and is easy on the stomach and recommended by Vets for dogs with a sensitive stomach or getting over illness or other condition.
Warm water over a puppy kibble would be good too, however, you can get a small kibble for an aging dog as well, and surely your 12 y/o doesn't need the nutrients a Puppy needs.
You can also go with a soft catfood kibble for Older or Adult cats. It won't hurt him/her and sometimes switching to a cat food can be easy on the dog and they like the taste 9 of 10 times.
I'm assuming that your dog has either a dental or stomach issue as to why you need to make the change.
If she/he can manage boiled hamburger (drained of ALL grease afterwards mixed with some hot water in the small kibble would be good.
Bottom line, ask your Vet what he recommends if you have a hard time deciding. Usually they will offer a good choice.
Science Diet is a highly recommended food by Vets and maybe that slightly moistened would be a good move.
I hope one of these works well.
Good Luck!

If there is a food that he or she like and always been getting well still give it to he or she....just put it with some water or milk for 10 or 15 mins and give it to he or she that is what I do with my dogs when they are not eating the dry dog food it very soft and they love it....
I feel you must try not to change he or she food, its really not so good at times......
Good luck.

Are you switching to soft food due to a vet recommendation? Are the dog's teeth bad?
If a vet said to do it, ask what they might recommend based on your dog's overall health. If you are doing it because you think the dog is too old to eat kibble just remember that kibble helps keep the dog's teeth clean when they chew it. Therefore, if that is the case, try to do half dry and half wet to avoid dental issues.
Good luck!

If your dog always did well with the food she ate, you can make gruel (it's used to wean puppies on solid food) out of it. Simply soak 2 parts dry food with one part water. After it softens, put it in a blender. If you need to, add a little more water while it's blending.
Your dog will eat this just as she always did.

Why not just add a bit of water to the dry food and soften it up for her... Canned foods often contain high levels of lead... Not good at all for any dog.

I know there are some expensive brands like science diet. You could get puppy chow, that would be easy for it and you could put water on the food and that would soften it even more. If you add water do not out as much feed in the bowl - yes it will expand.

Ask your vet for advice. My dog is 17 and she's on the senior mix from Pedigree. It's expensive, but she's worth it. I put vegetable oil over her food to soften it and help her digestion. It also helps her skin and fur.
Honestly, your vet would be the person to ask for advice. Good luck and may you and your buddy not be separated for another ten years.

the can food or put the dog's hard food in warm / hot kettle warm until cool down and give it to the dog.
That is the easier way to do it - 2 of my dogs don't have teeth now they can suck on the food
