It's not hard to walk the distance and will take less than half an hour. 42nd Street is busy at all hours, and it's a straight shot past Times Square down to Park Avenue (where Grand Central is located).
If you choose to take the subway, you'll probably spend 15 minutes just walking in stations or waiting on the platform, but it's not hard. Enter the Times Square subway complex (just east of the Port Authority terminal on 42nd Street). Walk past the A/C/E station (where you'll enter) to the main part of the complex. Follow signs to either the 7-train or the S-train. During the day, the S (which means "shuttle") is the quickest way. Hop on and go to the next (and only) stop, which is Grand Central. The shuttle doesn't run at night, so instead you'd take the 7-train. Grand Central is the second stop on the 7. Walk upstairs, and you're there.

when in port auth main terminal take the escalator downstairs following signs for the subway. there is an undergrould walkway that brings you to times square, about a 5 min walk. when u get to times square take the S subway, which is the Shuttle. it runs back and for th from times square to grand central all day those are the only two stops.

If you can time yourself for a specfic train (see the schedule below), the fastest way is to take the Metro-North Waterbury Branch from Waterbury to Grand Central Terminal. From there, go into the subway station and take the 42nd Street Shuttle to Times Square, which is a block away from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. If you don't want to deal with the infrequent Waterbury Branch service, you can try driving to the Bridgeport station, where there is frequent service (and express service) to Grand Central. From there, go into the subway station and take the 42nd Street Shuttle to Times Square, which is a block away from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The fare from Bridgeport to Grand Central is $16.50 during peak hours and $12.50 during off-peak hours. Remember to purchase your ticket before boarding the train to avoid the on-board surcharge The fare from Bridgeport to Grand Central is $15.50 during peak hours and $11.75 during off-peak hours. Again, remember to purchase your ticket before boarding the train to avoid the on-board surcharge. Tha fare on the 42nd Street Shuttle is $2.50 for a SingleRide Ticket, or $2.25 when using a MetroCard. I hope this information was very helpful.

From PA exit walk one block east on 42d st to times sq. subway station & take the 42d St. Shuttle right to Grand Central. Or, the regular #7 train will do the same, but not as frequently.
