For what?
MS-DOS - fast singlethreaded text oriented applications
Windows 2000 - basic internet with sharable resources and shared application data
Windows XP - some cool music and video apps, some cool games
Windows Vista - while not proven yet, it would really ROCK, but currently slow as an OLD DOG
Mac OS - Yikes, for print media preparation, or "I'm too stupid to use Windows" mentality.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Best Operating System in what ways, is it in terms of less price, free OS, performance, user friendly, etc.. But in all ways the best operating systme is Windows XP Professional (SP2). Reasons: 1) Very User Friendly, 2) Supports Almost all Hardwares, doesn't need drivers from outside, 3) Does not need a very high configuration, 4) Regular patches keep coming from Microsoft, 5) Has a excellent look, 6) More Secured, supports both the file systems, can connect to domain last but not the leaast supports all other OS for dual booting.

This is one of those questions which you will only get opinions and those that use particular operating systems.
Windows - 2K and XP are the ones to use
This is good for general run of the mill programs, Easy to use and program for.
The problem I have with Linux is that its too difficult for the laymen to use. The installation of programs is an absolute nightmare, why why why is it so difficult, I firmly believe If they get it to a point whereby you just double click on a downloaded file and it installs then Linux will take off mainstream,
There is limited software (in comparison to Windows)
Other than openoffice there is nothing really useful
I also dispute the other comment made regarding programming, It seems quite difficult to me.
On a good note it is quite secure networking (better than Windows).
Apple Mac OS are very good graphically
BTW I use XP Pro, Ubuntu and Suse across home and work
(So I am sort of impartial)
As for Vista wait for the service packs before venturing.

It all depends upon what you want out of an OS. If you like to have lots of freedom to tinker and play with your OS, or if you're into programming, Linux wins. If you are into gaming, Windows is probably your best choice since most games are for that platform. And if you enjoy graphics or video work, the Mac is the best. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses.

well if you are on a home pc id have to say windows xp SP2, vista is still a bit wobbly and wins 98,ME and 2000 are just prehistioric now, unfortuantly like all technology microsoft are trying to evolve all pc's into 64bit machines phasing 32bit out (same as transition from win95-98) so eventually everyone will need at least windows xp64bit ed to run newest programs

Win2k prehistoric? LOL! I use it on most of my PCs on my lan! Its efficient, dependable, and fast! The couple brand new PCs have XP on them and are the slowest pieces of crap I have ever seen! 2k is the forerunner to XP! I wouldnt touch Vista with a ten foot pole right now! Sounds like the most buggy, least software and hardware compatible version they have ever put out!
DAN! I didnt think I would EVER! Mac? LOL!

i might before everything propose that till you desire to run greater desirable than one OS on a working laptop or laptop, do no longer take suggestion from absolutely everyone who's doing that. those human beings are nerds and geeks and that they stay for doing those products in basic terms because of fact it extremely is there to do, quite than any real international want. I count extensive type myself as a sort of geeks yet i've got no longer run distinctive OS's for some years now. i'm all approximately how lots show real sources i can get for in basic terms one OS it extremely is set up nicely to artwork for me. i do no longer in all danger see huge distinction between OS X and abode windows 7. they're the two suited notch OS's. abode windows provides get entry to to greater video games and a much wider internet of expert application yet OS X is beginning as much as catch the builders for some gaming now and maximum glaring initiatives are dealt with in application selection. So it extremely comes all the way down to look and experience. OS X seems with reference to the comparable as abode windows 7 in use yet whilst it consists of the appliance, OS X pulls forward. coming up for Apple seems to tension programmers right into a stricter rule set for a fashion the appliance seems. long previous are horribly grotesque icons you will see everywhere in abode windows and long previous too are the previous-shaped looking applications that are no longer hip to the hot type policies abode windows casually instruments out. Apple additionally take an extremely lively function in making particular a great set of hetero forward application applications are all accessible just about with the OS or at little or free of charge greater desirable to handle be conscious processing, image administration, video enhancing, music gathering etc. abode windows has all that application too it in basic terms would not kit it besides for sparkling clientele to get at definitely. working example with abode windows you may bypass and manually acquire the stay p.c.. to get get entry to to 3 application which could extremely already be interior the OS first of all. And if it sounds like i'm determining on at Microsoft, i'm somewhat yet ordinary it extremely is nevertheless my selection in OS's. abode windows 7 64bit gets my vote. So in short, OS X = fantastically and robust, abode windows = fantastically solid
