I want a puppy that's not too big, and not too small. My dog does not get along with other dogs. How do I change that? And where can I check for a puppy?

Please avoid newspaper ads, internet ads, and all the other nefarious sources one can find a dog. They are generally poor quality dogs that have been created for no other reason than to make money.

Craig's List *may* be a decent place to find a rescue pup, but ensure that the owners are getting their dog fixed. If they aren't, don't give them any of your money.

And if your dog doesn't get along with other dogs, then you need to hold off until that is fixed. Start bringing him to training classes to try and work it out. DO NOT bring a new dog in until this is taken care of!

You might want to work with a dog trainer on socializing your dog. You would be best off not to get another dog until yours is socialized. This will take some time. Since you know your dog does not get along with other dogs, if you got a puppy now your dog might attack the puppy and could even kill it.
There are many places to look for a puppy. There are all kinds of shelters from ASPCA to no kill shelters. There are ads in the paper of people selling and sometimes even giving away puppies.

If you have a dog that doesn't get along with other dogs, then why in the world would you want a puppy? Your dog will no doubt be jealous and probably hurt the puppy. You can't change your dog not liking other dogs. I would forget the puppy idea and get some kind of taring for your dog.

Before getting a puppy, I'd take your dog to obediance classes or the dog park. Your dog needs to be socialized first. PetSmart has great programs for dogs that aren't expensive. Also, if you are in the US, check out www.craigslist.com for your area, and go to the pets section. You may find a local person that gives classes.

It wouldn't be fair to your new puppy to come into a home that the other dog isn't welcoming him/her. Plus, to your current dog, it isn't fair either.

Your dog doesn't get along with other dogs, but he/she is going to even be worse on his/her own territory (your home). Please socialize your dog prior to getting a puppy.

As for a puppy, why not get a rescue dog from the Humane Society or SPCA? They usually have a lot of puppies. These animals need homes.

Figure out what breed best suits your lifestyle, and check Rescue for that particular breed. Rescue often has puppies available, or might be able to point you in the right direction.
IF your current dog doesn't get along with other dogs, why are you getting a second?
Your Current dog needs more controlled socialization around other dogs. Take a training class, let him realize that there is nothing to fear. If he is aggressive, then you are in the right place to work on it.

I would visit your local humane center! There are so many dogs out there that really need homes and the best dog I have ever had was actually a mut!

As for the older dog, it might be better if you try to get a dog that isn't a full blown puppy. Maybe shoot for a 2-3 yr old. That way it will be a bit more mellow towards your older dog and it may be able to with stand it better.

If your dog doesn't get along with other dogs, I would not suggest getting a puppy. However, if you think it might just be certain dogs, or if your dog is still young, you might be able to socialize him/her some. I would check local animal shelters. Most of them don't charge anything, and they have tons of puppies that need good homes. They might even let you bring your dog up there to meet the one you pick to make sure they can get along.

Your best bet is to check the animal shelter or the local SPCA. Now, you could check the newspaper: Often people have free puppies to give away, and the momma at least is there so you can guess how big the pup will be when he's a grown dog.

As for your dog- I really do not know what's causing his problem. But he's going to have to be trained to behave around other dogs. Give him affection when he's a good dog, but tell him 'No!' when he does something he shouldn't.

Good luck!

I would look at either the Animal Shelter or Animal Friend's (which is a no kill shelter). You need to really consider the way your dog is going to react and treat a puppy. You do not want to bring in a puppy only to have your other dog harm it. You may want to contact your vet, which knows your dog and get his or her suggestions. Good luck.

There are plenty of places like the paper and shelters and foster homes that have pets. If you are not sure what breed to get than go to www.akc.org and check out all the different breeds.

If your dog does not get along with other dogs. Take him with you when you go to pick out a new animal so that they can meet on neutral territory and he will not be so defensive. Do not get a new dog that will cause conflict with the old one.
