He is in the LR with everybody, me , my dog, 3 cats & anybody that comes by & hears TV all the time too. Any suggestions? I want a singer & hate to have to return him to pet shop. Thanks

First it's probably way too early for him to feel comfortable enough to sing if he's only been in your house a week. Birds are highly stressed animals and he's probably just gotten over the trauma of the new environment. Second, most birds won't sing if there are cats running by them. A bird needs to be completely comfortable in the surroundings to open up and sing. My father used to collect singing canaries and he actually trained most of them with music. First you might want to take a quick trip to the vet just to get the bird sexed and be sure that he is male, then isolate the bird for a while in a quiet room alone with no cats running by and pick some really pretty instrumental music to play to the bird. Do this 3-4 hours a day for about a week, if he's gonna sing he will. Next once you get one that will sing and does it well, you can get others and use that one to train the others to jump in. If you can't find any music that it will sing to, post a question asking for me and I will upload you a cd my dad made back in the 80's it is pretty music with his #1 singers he recorded while they were singing to it and made tapes to help the new birds get the idea what he expected from them. He recently converted it to a cd and I play it during the holidays, it's beautiful. I will figure out a way to email or mail a copy to you. Once you get him singing try reintroducing him to the other places in your house and see if he will still sing, he may not. Most canaries need to be inspired to open up, and cat's and people running around in a new environment and an annoying TV drowning him out won't do it. Good luck once you find one who will bless you with singing it is a great gift.
Canaries sing all year long.

A canary will only sing at certain times during the year. I don't remember the specifics, but my dad had a canary and he knows a lot about birds. He got it from a breeder and he was told that they don't sing all year long. You just need to wait it out
