Recent research has shown that the genetic changes may take place as a result of alcoholism, not as a cause. So this would place more emphasis on the psychological side. I see it as a behavioural disorder, a bad choice people get stuck in, and it is hard to overcome. But not because it's 'in your blood'. More likely, it's in your environment what you've seen, what you've tried that works (for a while at least) but then once ensnared in the addictive net, you lose your perspective and can't find your way out. There may still be some genetic predisposition, but it is not an inescapable biological destiny.

I believe it is a blend of both. One is born with a genetic predisposition and if he/she is raised in an alcoholic household, chances are that the person will inadvertently "learn" the disruptive coping mechanisms. Sometimes I think that it is more of the behavior. Whether or not anyone wants to admit it, the way one's parents handled things had a lasting impression, an imprint upon the psyche. I'm not saying it means that a person HAS to repeat the cycle, but I think it takes a person to be very aware of his/her actions and responses to not fall into the learned behavior patterns. Sorry if it was/is boring and made no sense. Obviously it is an extremely complicated issue. Good question.

It's a bit of both. Different people react differently to alcohol (or any other drug for that matter).

Alcohol is addictive psychologically. But if a parent has a physical makeup that makes them respond to alcohol more severely, that's likely to transfer to a child.

Blend of both...an physical allergy if you will to alcohol, and then the psychological compulsion to continue drinking when the adverse consequences are known

it actually can ,and many times is a blend of both, many people have a pre disposition to addiction imprinted in their dna, it may lie dormant until some external event triggers the addictive pattern, usually it is something traumatic or another social event that causes them to use alcohol, gambling, sex or whatever the vice may be as a crutch to deal with the situation.

It appears to be both. That is, some alcoholics have a genetic predisposition to it while others are the first in their line to experience its trials and tribulations

it is psychological the only reason why people think that is genetic is because they see one of their family doing it and then they feel like they should do the same
