My daughter just purchased a new "ACER" computer that has the windows vista. And like everyone else, didn't know the facts. So now she can't get the programs and information she need for her help in her collage classes. Is it possible in any way to get the windows xp edition installed on this computer? We got this at Best Buy store, Jan. 31, and they want exchange after 14 days. seems she is stuck with a non useable ACER or go back the 5 year old H.P. any sugestions? Any help welcome>

Perhaps she should spend more time on the tutorials or go to their help line .

If she is used to XP it is just a question of relearning.

I bought my PC just be for Vista was released so I would still get XP. Unlike the old PC mine had MS WORKS and not WORDS, so I had to adapt to a different system, but the Install Wizard worked brilliantly

Tell her to persevere.
You didn't say how old she is and how long she has been using XP.

If she is still quite young she will learn more quickly than a teenager who has use XP for a long time.

Surely others at school are having the same problems so she should chat to them, as they will all be learning together and if someone solve a problem word will get around quickly enough

Yes, you can probably still install windows xp on her new computer. You might have to install the full version of windows xp. The cost for that might be around $200 or more. The windows xp upgrade is about $100. If you do go this road, ask a best buy employee and tell them your situation and the best option for you.

I would try to figure out why her programs are not working with her new computer. Can you tell us what they are?

Are the programs she wants to use not compatible with Windows Vista? There are many software alternatives which are Vista compatible. Which type of programs does she want to use?

You have a few options available. If you have a copy of Windows XP installation CD, you can reformat your hard drive and then install Windows XP. But, you will lose any information on the hard drive. Be sure to backup files before reformatting your computer.

There is a way to use Windows XP inside of Windows Vista using a method called virtual operating system. It is commonly used by software developers to check if a program will work in a particular operating system. It is easier to set up than it sounds. What you need is one free software program and a full Windows XP Installation CD. Here is a step by step guide on how to use virtual os.

You've taken the leap into Windows Vista, but once in awhile, your heart yearns for the classic features and functionality of XP. Maybe you've got software that doesn't yet work in Vista, or maybe you just want to see how a web site looks in Internet Explorer 6. You could dual-boot XP and Vista, but switching between operating systems in that setup takes too much time.

Instead, quickly toggle between Windows versions with an XP virtual machine running inside Vista using the free Virtual PC 2007. Here's how.

why do you want to go back to Windows XP just wondering? just get Microsoft Office Suite for students edition (which will help her do labs in excel and write papers in word..etc) and install on her computer that's probably most what she needs at college.

Its best to contact ACER customer support. Tell them the issue. Most likely when you downgrade to XP, the drivers won't work. And you have to go to their website to download the right drivers for XP.

Good luck!
