Would a driving conviction for a driving a **** car (4 illegal tyres and defective lights - resulting in 3 points on my licence) greatly affect any chances. Also I'm 19, is there a minimum age?

I think you might be asking about UK?.If so there are no traffic police as such. You join the police then following your two year probation you apply for vacancies in traffic department it could take a few years.Driving cons of the type you mention are not a bar to getting into the police or traffic section.

You would need to apply to join as a pc in the normal way. During your two year probationary period you could apply for an attachment to the 'traffic' or roads policing department and express an interest in a permanent position. I wouldn't recommend joining the traffic department too early in your career, make sure you get a good grounding in general police duties before applying for any specialist role. Be honest about your points, you won't be able to hide them anyway and it won't affect your chances. Good luck and yes you are old enough.

As discussed, you will need to join the police first, and then apply to specialise further into your career.

A conviction for driving offences does not preclude you from joining, unlike some offences (mainly dishonesty related i.e. theft). However, the Chief Constable can turn down your application for ANY reason and does not have to inform you of that reason.

Good luck if you apply.

Earl is right, reps meet interesting people. Police dont - they stop reps & have to talk to them - what a yawn!
