Just between two choices:
1. Prisoners or prison workers
2. ILLEGAL aliens
I prefer #1 - Prisoners to pick my veggies, including my fruits too. At least we can make use of prison workers and at the same time they can earn money to become self-sufficient.
However, there's a big question that springs from this case: Are all prisoners or prison workers here legally? Do these prisoners have proper documentation? Are they legal residents in the USA? Are they legal citizens in the USA? Do they have legal visas to stay in the USA?
If you do further research, you will find astounding statistics, especially in California prisons... that there are at least 10% of prison inmates are ILLEGAL aliens, or have no proper documentation. Here in Los Angeles, most LATINO gang members are illegal aliens. As a matter of fact, being a criminal with no Federal records or finger prints - is very favorable to your career being a criminal. I mean, if you are a legal immigrant of this country - you undergo through a very strict process. The ICE, Homeland Security, and other offices will screen you thoroughly. They get your BIOMETRICS, finger prints and photograph. Whereas, illegal aliens who just cross the border by foot DO NOT have any biometric records... therefore - it is perfectly okay for them to join the criminal world.
Also, the state of Colorado DID NOT chase away LEGAL immigrants. For you to say that "... chasing immigrants, legal and illegal, ..." is totally a misguided, mal-informed, immature, careless and totally absurd statement. Do you honestly think that the State of Colorado will chase away LEGAL immigrants? If any State Government in the USA will start chasing LEGAL immigrants, then - I will be in the forefront against that kind of irresponsible, unconstitutional behaviour.
Impact on education dollars:
If you are from Arizona - and you want to study at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) - you must pay some sort of "Out-Of-State" Tuition/Fee or you have to pay more - simply because you are not from California. But if you are an illegal alien who lives in California - you will have "In-State" tuition benefits/discounts when you attend UCLA. That absurd law clearly favors ILLEGAL aliens.
Impact on medical care dollars:
Also, a pregnant woman cross the border, then delivers her baby at a hospital in Los Angeles. She goes to the emergency/delivery room - and does not pay a dime for the delivery and care. Guess what? Her baby becomes a LEGAL US Citizen. The woman is ILLEGAL, she does not pay for hosptial services... then this ridiculous government rewards her by making her baby - A LEGAL US CITIZEN. This is no longer funny... my dear friends.
Getting back to focus, if by saying "rather than illegals" - you mean ILLEGAL aliens, then - I would say - let all illegal aliens go back to their home country so they can pick their own veggies there. Do not bother the USA.
It is time to address this ILLEGAL immigration problem. This has caused the USA billions of dollars.

I'd prefer prison workers. I've never been in prison but my dad was a guard at Statesville when it was a self supporting facility.
I have known people in jail and after awhile....they want to get out and be able to do something productive. Fresh air, blue sky......a little hard work and maybe there might be some appreciation of things. Who's to say it couldn't turn into a productive means for future employment for some. A different market than illegal they could tap. That's a more productive way to pay their debt to society than watching TV or staring at a wall or conversing about new ways to polish up their act when they get out.

You may have been trying to put a spin on it but it worked the opposite way. I hope all states model Colorado and deport the illegals. This is a perfect use, free labor from the prisoners AND getting rid of the illegals.

My dad served time in two prisons - one a maximum security prison with very strict rules, he shared a cell with a murderer. The other was an open prison that had no fences or locks. He could walk out if he wanted. You know which prison he prefered? The maximum security one, because there he got to work on a computer doing design work. At the open prison he had to pick sprouts till his hands bled.

First let me start by saying this. I know that it has been over 200 yrs since our wonderful country was founded, BUT!!! Are we so ignorant to how our country was founded that we forget that it was done by immigration????? Well it was... And I really hate to say it but if you were to fly into outer space and look down on the world there is NO BORDERS... So therefore there should be no such thing as Illegal aliens anyway. As to your questions, prisoners are in jail for a reason and should stay there.... If they were good law abiding citizens, LIKE the people picking the veggies they would be able to do it freely.... Plus the only thing illegal about immigrants is US.....

I prefer those on welfare to pick my veg. I was appaulled to find the Welfare state has increased. At least the Illegals come here to work. The reason why they may be thinking about it is that there are not enough low wage workers in California. Illegal immigrants are rejecting $10 an hour jobs now. I think that people are hiring them, not because of direct wages but that Illegals can't sue nor do their boss has to pay for Workers COmp insurance on them.

According to most people in this forum our prisons are FILLED with illegal immigrants. If that was the case what would be the difference in illegals picking my veggies vs. prison workers picking them? If prison workers pick the veggies our tax $$ are paying for that. If illegals pick them then the individual farmer or company the illegal works for has to pay.

yes i would rather see prison in mates picking vegetables. they also get payed for doing the job. at least they are helping to take care of their self while incarcerated. it's about time the govt is doing something smart.
