Is there a big difference and is photoshop 7 better?

photoshop 7 is definitely better. 5 is what i used when i first got into the field back in 1997. It's way out of date. Not to mention that PS 7 is also now way out of date. The most current is Photoshop CS2. CS3 is on the way, too. If you're worried about the money, get Photoshop Elements. It doesn't have nearly the features of regular PS, but it'll do if you're not a pro. Even if you are a pro there are so many features in PS that you'll never be able to know everything.

Tremendous difference. If you can, upgrade to the altest version which is version 9 / Photoshop CS2.

Several things. Most important to me is the healing brush. Adobe usually has a video tutorial for the differences between versions.

5 has less features and 7 has more features
