Yes, some might. I had a cat who would bristle and growl (different from other sounds cats make, really sounded like a low dog growl) when we'd be napping (indoors) and he'd hear something too close to our space (always summer when we had the windows open wide); he'd stand there at the end of the bed fully alert. I've heard of cats who, because they can walk so quietly, have snuck up on an intruder, jumped on him with claws fully extended on all four feet, lunged, clawed, scratched, bit. Intruder yanked the cat off and threw it but intruder ended up with mega deep rips and tears which festered (cat mouths and claws are full of bacteria) so the police tracked the guy down. But not every cat will do this (as not every dog will defend its master). I have a feeling my current female cat would be a demon when necessary (not sure she'd defend me but she's defend herself) just because she keeps 2 vets and 2 vet techs at bay every time we have to go to the vet (they have to sedate her in her carrier).

Not likely, she might alert your neighbour to strangers or intruders, but other than a few scratches on the leg, maybe a bite or two, the can't couldn't protect someone. Unless the intruder was already tied up and laying on the floor within reach... Remember someone who is intruding, wouldn't think twice about kicking the cat!

Not been burgled but my moron of a dad came in once without knocking (the front door was unlocked) and Sasha (my cat) proceeded to shred his right calf.

I laughed which put him in a bad mood but as I say he's a moron.

So basically yes I'm sure she'd go for an intruder, between her and the 2 dogs they'd kill a burglar.

Technically though she ISN'T a domestic cat-her mum was but her dad was a Scottish Wildcat.

One of mine would leap onto their shoulders (or back) - if not expected, it'd probably give them the fright of their lives, not to mention scratch marks (he's a big cat). Once he was there he'd nuzzle them into submission - he's incredibly affectionate. Another cat is deceptively cute and pretty, but has one of the most evil tempers I've ever encountered in a feline. One minute she'll be nuzzling your hand; the next minute she'll be sinking her fangs in and hanging on for grim death.

True story: a friend's neighbour's cat alerted her owner to a burglary at my friend's house. House was empty; burglars broke in. The noise woke the cat, who was sleeping on her master's chest - she bolted, as she was a neurotic little thing. Her master woke up and heard the commotion next door, so rang the police, who were able to get there pretty promptly. Normally he would have slept through it, but the cat woke him. The burglars fled empty-handed, but had put a number of items by the back door to take away.

pah my cats cant even protect themselves against cat-intruders!! when another cat comes in the cat flap in the middle of the night they sit at the top of the stairs mewling until I get up and scare it off. If a real intruder came in they'd probably be hiding in the loft!

Only if your cat is as big as a guard dog.

Better yet, get a tiger or leopard - they're big cats, and they can kill the intruder and guard your house if trained well. They could kill you too.. if you're not careful.

My cat would likely raise it's head, stare at the intruder then go back to sleep.

It usually runs away from other cats and ignores humans.

Did you ever hear the term scaredy cat? Or fraidy cat?Well that is because a cat is afraid and will run and hide. Unless it is dark and everyone is in bed then the cat may wake you up to let you know someone is in the house.
