Andrew introduced Peter to Jesus and he had the faith to follow. Jesus later declared that Peter's knowledge that He, Jesus, was the Christ, came from God by revelation.
Blessed art thou, Simon bar Jonas, for flesh and bones hath not revealed this unto you but my Father who is in Heaven.
That ultimately is how each and every one of us comes to know about Christ and God, by personal revelation in response to our faith and prayers.
If any man will do my will, he will know of the doctrine, whether it be of God or whether I speak of myself.
As James taught, "if any lack wisdom, let him ask of God who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting"

His brother Andrew had told him previously, but at that instance Simon Peter received a powerful confirmation that "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God." That's how we all find out that Jesus was the Christ (at least all true believers.) Someone can tell us over and over that Jesus is the Christ but the confirming witness is the testimony received by revelation, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Mat 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Mat 16:17 And Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.

By a revelation from Heaven, because Jesus said that no flesh can call Jesus Christ the Son of God, but by the spirit.

John 1:41 He findeth first his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messiah (which is, being interpreted, Christ).

Matthew 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jonah: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father who is in heaven.

1John 5:9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for the witness of God is this, that he hath borne witness concerning his Son.

Maybe you can decide now which is the better answer.

Ha ha...somebody keeps thumbing down all the real true and sincere spiritual answers. That somebody is really threatened by Truth.

BTW, Jesus said that flesh and blood did not reveal this (a man), but revelation, the wordless realizing and knowing that is the mark of all the good Christians, and the conviction of the atheists.

The assertion by Pater's brother Andrew that he had "found the Christ, (or Messiah)" was based on the proclamation of John Baptist, who declared "behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world." This was early in Jesus' ministry, and piqued Peter's interest enough to begin following Jesus. The latter event took place much later in the last year of Jesus' ministry. It was a direct revelation from God the Father to the heart of Peter that this extraordinary man he had been following for some time now was in fact the promised Messiah and "the Son of the Living God". Jesus then said "blessed are you Simon son of Jona, because flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter (Greek petros=a stone, or small detached piece of rock) and upon this rock (Greek petra = a large mass of rock, like the rock of Gibraltar; often used in referring to bedrock) I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it."
(Matthew 16:17,18)
The question that arises then is: what is the bedrock upon which Jesus will build His church? I believe the answer is in what just transpired - the confession that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, based on the direct revelation of God the Father to the heart.
Jesus said in John 6:44 "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws Him; and I will raise Him up on the last day."
Peter had an introduction based on the opinion of a man that began his quest into whether Jesus really was the Christ, the Son of God; but he did not come to a settled conviction of this until God the Father bore witness directly to the heart of Peter and he believed that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God.
This accords with the teaching of Jesus that says: "And I say to you, everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man shall confess him before the angels of God; but he who denies Me before men shall be denied before the angels of God." (Luke 12:8,9)
And: "that if you confess with your mouth "Jesus is Lord", and believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth one confesses, resulting in salvation." (Romans 10:9,10)

Both are true.A revelation from heaven was revealed to Andrew and he told it to Simon.

His brother told him, God revealed it as truth....

which is often how evangelism works. This is why we are commanded to preach the good news, but only God can reveal the good news! That is why Jesus said, "No man can come to me unless the Father has enabled him."

Exactly as it says, God revealed it to Him.
