If their standing in a line, dont they have to look to their side, like to the left and right? If the middle bird looks in front he wont see any bird, because the bird is standing next to him. I dont know, that is just a guess.

because of the way they where all facing, the 2 birds on the ends where looking at the other 2 birds on the branch.

Because the 1st two birds were facing away from their mates. The one in the middle was looking out from the branch.

The middle bird is facing another direction i.e Bird on the left is facing right, bird in the middle is facing forward or sideways, bird on the right is facing right.
