Is He telling us to overpopulate the earth, and strip it of all its natural resources?
Does he say anywhere what the rational limits on multiplying are?

We have a long way to go before we have to be concerned about overpopulating the Earth. America and most European countries are reasonably populated. Countries like Ethiopia Africa who are overpopulated are killing each other off. They keep things balanced we don't need to worry,

Whoever said that all things in the Old Testament no longer matter. This seems to be a fairly recent notion not supported even 100 years ago?
God is in control. He will never let us destroy this earth beyond its capability to support us for as long as He desires to have people on this earth.
That does not mean that we don't do our best to take care of the great gift He has given us but I do believe that He has placed plenty of natural resources on this earth for us to use for as long as He has planned for us to be here.

How many children a family has is between a man and woman. No where did God say you must have a bunch of kids.
One religion did say "Don't use birth control" pills but did recommend the rhythm method of birth control

I think you will find this in the Old Testament when the population was very small it was necessary to populate the earth. One
example was after the flood when the population was almost zero.

Don't worry, Christianity will take care of that too. There is an evangelical in office that is determined to start WW3 before he leaves office. While he is busy with self fulfilling prophecy the population should be trimmed.

We're not over populated, but we are depleting the resources, as in using them too much and not replacing them.
Over population, in my humble opinion, is a myth.
