They light useless fires.
MAL 1:10 "Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you," says the LORD Almighty, "and I will accept no offering from your hands. 11 My name will be great among the nations, from the rising to the setting of the sun. In every place incense and pure offerings will be brought to my name, because my name will be great among the nations," says the LORD Almighty.

There are many things that are done at the Temples. They conduct extremely sacred rituals, like eternal marriage ceremonies (marriage sealing) , and baptism of the dead, among many other things.
Some things must be kept from the outside world for it is proven that the world will not understand, nor it wants to understand.
The only way to know what takes place within the Temple walls, is to become an LDS member and earn the right to visit the Temple.
By the way, nothing "sinister" goes on in there. Much less nothing immoral. Doing anything improper there would cause the President of the Church to destroy the Temple.

Unfortunately, curiosity just isn't enough.
Basically, we perform sacred saving ordinances - some have been mentioned, such as eternal marriage, baptism by proxy for those who have died, and our endowment. We believe the temples are the houses of the Lord and He has set forth the standards those who attend must be living by. It's not that there are secrets or scary things or anything unholy and we don't "want anyone to know", it is infact the complete opposite - everything done in the temple is sacred, wonderful, peaceful and holy, and we invite all to become worthy to enter the temples.
I love to go to the temple because I can leave all the worldy cares behind, be surrounded by members of my own faith and be at peace. We can receive personal revealtion in the temple, perform ordinances for our ancestors, perform our own ordinances and learn so much more about where we came from, why we are here, who we really are and where we can go in the next life. It is a wonderful place and I know when I am there I can feel the presence of the Lord and I know that it is truly His house.

Mormons are told that is a sacred and not to talk about it outside of the temple. A great book that talks about it is 'The Holy Temple'. If you want you can e-mail and ask me questions I was a Mormon for 25 years and sever a mission
